- PTA conducted the bidding for the grant of frequencies of Wireless Local Loop (WLL) licenses for Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJ&K) and Northern Areas (NAs)
- PTA organized an Expert Group Forum meeting on “Information Security Guidelines for the Government of Pakistan” with the aspiration to setup comprehensive, pragmatic and implementable security guidelines that could be followed to ensure that country’s national asset and information, does not reach unauthorized personnel.
- In order to eliminate illegal call termination; PTA acquired technical facility for monitoring of grey traffic. In this regard PTA and FIA have been making raids and conducting inspections on illegal telecom setups.
- Pakistan Telecom Sector has successfully implemented the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) and became the first country in the South Asia to have MNP.
- To over come mobile handset theft problem, PTA introduced a technical solution in collaboration with City Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) and on average 13,152 handsets/month are blocked.
- PTA launched Rural Telephony Project under which 400 Rabta Ghar (Telecentres) are being established in rural areas.
- In order to protect the telecom consumers PTA has recently established a Consumer Protection Directorate (CPD) at PTA.
- Today almost 92% of Pakistani Population has access to telecom services.
- At the end of October 2008, total Teledensity reached 60.4%, which is an exemplary growth in terms of penetration in the sector.
- Total Mobile subscribers till October 2008 stand at 90.5 million with cellular penetration reaching 56%.
- Total fixed line subscribers stand at 4.4 million where PTCL is still leading the market with more than 90% share in terms of subscribers
- Total Wireless Local Loop subscribers reached 2.3 million in 2008 with WLL density standing at 1.5%.
- Total Payphones working in the country both fixed and wireless are 449,121.
- Currently there are a total of almost 170,000 Broadband subscribers depicting 150% growth only in 2007. Dial up internet users in 2008 crossed 3.7 million
- Telecom sector of Pakistan has a share of almost 2% in National GDP.
- In the last 2-3 years Telecom sector has attracted record inflows of FDI and received over US$ 1,438 million in 2007-08 thus having 27% share in the total FDI.
- Total investment made during 2007-08 in all segments of telecom sector was US$ 3,113 million.
- During 2007-08 telecom revenues grew by 18% and reached Rs. 278 billion. Mobile sector has a share of 56% in total telecom revenues.
- Telecom sector is also a major contributor to national exchequer and PTA deposits more than Rs. 111.63 billion only in 2007-08.
- PTA submitted a total of Rs. 44.61 billion as GST/CED to Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) in 2007-08.
