Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Major General (Retd.) Shahzada Alam Malik has said that PTA would continue to introduce latest telecom technologies for the benefit of the consumers and shifting of cellular mobile technology from 2^nd Generation to 3^rd Generation would take place within due course of time.

He stated this while making opening remarks at a presentation titled ?Mobile Technology Evolution from 2G to 3G? arranged by PTA , here in Islamabad.

The Chairman PTA said that the process of deliberations on limited mobility has been completed with the help of all cellular mobile and WLL operators and a comprehensive determination would be announced soon in this regard.

While explaining the importance of 3G technology, Gen. Shahzada said that PTA was putting every endeavor to bring home latest cellular mobile technologies including the 3^rd Generation. He said that it has always been difficult to introduce new telecommunication methods and technologies but like in the past, PTA would facilitate all operators to switch over to the latest technologies.

Chairman PTA said shifting from 2G to 3G is a highly technical issue and PTA would make all necessary arrangements before its introduction and we should educate the people before the new technologies are launched. The 3G technology has good prospects of popularity in urban areas, he added.

Mr. Abdul Durani a telecom expert of Telefocal Asia, Singapore gave detailed presentation on the evolution of 3G technology.

According to him the 3G (Third Generation) is a category of next generation mobile networks that operates at a higher frequency bandwidth and a larger channel bandwidth. Moreover, large bandwidth enables 3G networks to support very high data rates, up to 2 Mbps.

Mr. Durani explained that 3G technology will enhance data speed and all convergence services while broadcasting facilities would also be available at one platform.

The presentation was attended by senior PTA officials, representatives of PTCL, mobile and fixed line operators, telecom experts and students of different varsities.
